Wärtsilä will supply a propulsion and power package for a new 75-m fishing trawler built at Karstensen shipyard, Denmark for Scottish owners and operators Wiseman Fishing and Northbay Fishing
The vessel will feature a Wärtsilä 31(W31) main engine, two Wärtsilä 14 (W14) power generating sets, a gearbox and a controllable pitch propeller (CPP).
Wärtsilä said that its aim in designing the trawler has been to achieve the best power density, the most efficient performance, and the lowest possible emission levels to achieve minimal environmental impact.
Karstensen shipyard’s Director Kent Damgaard said the medium speed W31 engine was chosen because of its "outstanding fuel efficiency” adding “we have installed it in several other of our newbuilds".
"The Wärtsilä 14 is an exciting newcomer for us, and we are confident that it is the right choice for this and possible future ships that we build," he said.
Both the W31 and the W14 are integral elements within the Finnish firm’s ’Smart Marine’ strategy aimed at raising efficiency levels as well as improving safety.
Karstensen shipyard and Wiseman Fishing are longstanding customers of Wärtsilä. As Wärtsilä Director Offshore and Special Vessels Henrik Wilhelms said “we have provided engines and propulsion solutions for both Karstensen and Wiseman Fishing, so it is an honour that they have once again put their trust in us for this new vessel".
The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery to Karstensen shipyard in early 2021.
Wärtsilä has also signed a co-operation agreement with Japan-based Kuribayashi Steamship Co to develop, sell and service gate rudders.
