Jiangsu Nanji Machinery of China’s NiBallast ballast water treatment system was granted US Coast Guard type-approval on 10 September 2021
The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the 44th US Coast Guard BWMS type-approval certificate to the NiBallast system from Jiangsu Nanji Machinery after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type-approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.
The treatment principle of the Nanji NiBallast ballast water management system (BWMS) consists of filtration during uptake and in-tank deoxygenation. This approval covers 15 models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 100 m3 and 4,000 m3 per hour.
The NiBallast BWMS’ first-stage stainless steel filter is a 50-μm self-cleaning section filter followed by a second stage of microfiltration membrane to remove all large and small micro-organisms and even bacteria, according to Jiangsu Nanji Machinery.
The filtered ballast water then enters the ballast tank, where it has a further de-oxygenation treatment stage using nitrogen. The filtered and de-oxygenated ballast water is directly discharged overboard.
