Northern Lights Phase 2 expansion at Øygarden will raise storage capacity and add fully electric liquefied CO2 marine loading arms by 2028
The Northern Lights CO2 terminal at Øygarden in Norway took another step in its Phase 2 expansion with the award of a contract for three fully electric liquefied CO2 marine loading arms for the new jetty.
The installation forms part of the wider plan to increase the terminal’s capacity to handle more than 5M tonnes of CO2 per year by 2028.
Technip Energies Loading Systems was awarded the contract to supply the three loading arms, which have been fully qualified for liquefied CO2 transfer. The company stated, for this second phase, it would deliver a fully electric design that removes the need for hydraulics and sets what it described as a new benchmark for operability, safety and environmental performance.
This follows its earlier delivery of the liquefied CO2 marine loading arms now operating in Phase 1.
Technip Energies senior vice president T.EN X - consulting and systems Charles Cessot said the award built on the first phase installation and aligned with the company’s wider carbon management strategy.
“The adoption of our fully electric marine loading arms underscores our commitment to innovation and to enabling the carbon management infrastructure that Europe needs,” Mr Cessot said.
He noted first-phase loading arms have already entered operation and the new contract reinforces the company’s position in the CCS market.
According to the company, the fully electric loading arms have been technically qualified and selected for their advanced performance, demonstrating its ability to bring field-ready technology into the CCS sector.
The arms will be installed on the new jetty serving Northern Lights, described in the press material as the world’s first open-access, cross-border CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, receiving liquefied CO2 from European industrial sites for temporary storage and subsequent offshore injection beneath the seabed.
The loading arm contract complemented the ongoing expansion works at Øygarden.
Phase One of Northern Lights was reported to be close to completion, with the venture’s CO2 carrier Northern Pioneer having carried out the first loading and offloading from Heidelberg Materials in Brevik and the second vessel, Northern Pathfinder, undergoing commissioning.
Phase Two, which includes the delivery of nine additional CO2 storage tanks, aiming to increase storage capacity from 1.5M tonnes to at least 5.0M tonnes of CO2 per year, is supported by a grant from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility for Energy and financed primarily through commercial investments.
The storage tanks were manufactured in Spain by IDESA and transported to Øygarden under the guidance of the Equinor Technical Service Provider project team.
“I am happy to see the transport and offloading operation of the storage tanks has been executed in an efficient manner without any incidents. It is an important milestone for the Phase 2 project and a visible landmark at our site in Øygarden,” said Equinor TSP project director for Phase 2, Knut Mathias Vestbø at the time.
Northern Lights is a joint venture between Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies.
