A shipbuilding and shipowning group and a classification society are developing a digital system that evaluates the roll stability of container ships during operations
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Bureau Veritas (BV) Marine & Offshore have started a joint development project aimed at reducing risk of container losses and ship damage from excessive rolling at sea.
They intend to develop and test an HHI onboard digital display that provides real-time guidance to crew on roll stability of container ships during actual operations, including in harsh sea conditions.
This comes as hundreds of containers are lost at sea off ships each year due to adverse weather, sea, wave, and current conditions causing excessive rolling.
The ability to monitor and assess a ship’s dynamic stability in real time has become ever more critical due to dynamic environmental conditions and maritime logistics, said BV Marine & Offshore president Alex Gregg-Smith.
“We are supporting the development of practical solutions that help shipowners better manage the risks associated with excessive rolling, promoting safer container ship operations,” he said.
During this project, the dynamic stability of HHI’s container ships will be reviewed in accordance with BV’s requirements and relevant regulations.
Both parties will validate the effectiveness of HHI’s real-time onboard guidance unit in preventing excessive rolling to prevent cargo losses and damage, and enhance operational safety of its vessels.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries senior executive vice president, Hong-Ryeul Ryu, expects this system “will provide shipowners with practical solutions to prevent excessive rolling and protect their cargo.... to help ensure container ships operate with the highest standards of safety even in severe weather conditions.”
