Rolls-Royce is currently developing methanol engines based on its Series 4000 platform. Methanol, particularly green methanol produced from biogenic or renewable sources, is gaining traction as a CO2-neutral fuel option. Rolls-Royce is currently developing hydrogen combustion engines for stationary energy supply. The engine is intended to serve as a reliable and clean power source for gensets and combined heat and power plants, as part of the energy transition. Rolls-Royce has successfully tested a 12-cylinder gas version of the Series 4000 L64 engine with 100 % hydrogen. The tests showed very good characteristics in terms of performance, efficiency, and emissions.
Due to the different combustion behaviour of hydrogen compared to natural gas, some engine components, including fuel injection, turbocharging, piston design and control, were modified in the test engine. However, by building on proven technologies within the Power Systems’ portfolio, such as turbochargers, injection valves, and engine electronics and control, the development of the engine to use hydrogen was advanced quickly and efficiently.

The first installation running on 100% hydrogen is planned for early 2025 for the Enerport II lighthouse project in the German inland port of Duisburg, as part of the development of a CO2-neutral energy supply for a new container terminal.
Rolls-Royce has also started, with a consortium of five companies and research institutes, to develop the necessary technologies for a highly efficient first-of-a-kind hydrogen combustion engine to drive combined heat and power (CHP) systems. Under the Phoenix (Performance Hydrogen Engine for Industrial and X) project, funded by the German Government, the consortium aims to generate the same electrical and thermal energy (power density and efficiency) as is currently available through natural gas CHP units in the higher power range of up to 2.5 MW. When fuelled by green hydrogen, this next-generation stationary energy plant will be able to run in a CO2-free manner.
In addition to methanol and hydrogen, Rolls-Royce is continuously analysing the complete synthetic fuel production ecosystem, including Power-to-X. These fuels, such as e-hydrogen, e-methane, e-methanol and e-diesel are needed as well as biofuels to meet projected demand.
Hybrid and integrated propulsion systems, which combine traditional engines with electric drives and energy storage systems, are a key area of innovation for Rolls-Royce. These systems rely on efficient turbocharging to optimise the performance of internal combustion engines, particularly during dynamic load changes, and these turbochargers are integral to the success of hybrid systems, demonstrating their versatility and importance in modern propulsion solutions.
