Ørsted has signed strategic volume contracts with offshore wind suppliers Bladt Industries and Steelwind Nordenham to receive monopile foundations for Ørsted’s German offshore windfarms Gode Wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3
The contract follows an EU tender. The two suppliers will manufacture 107 monopile foundations for the German projects, including the foundation for the offshore substation for Gode Wind 3. Steelwind will supply 66 monopiles, while Bladt will contribute 41 monopiles.
Subject to Ørsted’s final investment decisions, the 242-MW Gode Wind 3 and 900-MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore windfarms are expected to become fully operational by 2024 and 2025, respectively. Both projects will be powered by Siemens Gamesa’s 11-MW offshore wind turbines.
To carry the increasingly larger offshore wind turbines, monopile foundations have grown significantly in size over the past decade. The monopiles for Borkum Riffgrund 3 and Gode Wind 3 will be up to 100 m long, have a diameter of almost 10 m, and weigh approximately 1,200 tonnes.
Ørsted chief operating officer Richard Hunter said the large volume orders give suppliers the visibility they need to invest in their manufacturing facilities and build long-term capacity. The company has also secured call-off rights with Bladt and Steelwind for other projects.
Steelwind managing director Andreas Liessem said, "The co-operation with Ørsted for the construction of Borkum Riffgrund 3 and Gode Wind 3 proves Steelwind Nordenham has established itself in the market as a reliable manufacturer of high-quality XL monopiles. We are proud to make a significant contribution to the energy transition with our monopiles, which are made of quality steel from our parent company Dillinger."
Ørsted has also inaugurated its Netherlands-based offshore windfarm Borssele 1 & 2. The windfarm has been in full operation since Q4 2020 but the official inauguration was delayed by the pandemic.
The 752-MW Borssele 1 & 2 windfarm is Ørsted’s first offshore windfarm in the Netherlands and the largest of its kind in that country.
