A Spanish shipbuilder has picked up a second contract to construct a methanol-ready, diesel-electric offshore tug for a Norwegian owner
Gondan Shipbuilders has secured a second contract to build a 50-m tugboat for Østensjø Rederi to support offshore and terminal operations and ship-handling in Norway.
This tug will be a sister of the Skipsteknisk ST-933-design vessel the Spanish shipyard is already building for the Norwegian owner.
Østensjø confirmed the shipyard contract in a social media post on 7 July 2026.
"Contract signed for a second tug in our newbuild programme at Gondan Shipbuilders, a sister vessel to NB C515," said the Norwegian owner.
It will have a beam of 17 m, accommodation for 14 personnel, hybrid propulsion, DP2-class dynamic positioning, Caterpillar engines and generator sets and around 150 tonnes of bollard pull.
The first offshore tug is scheduled to be delivered in Q1 2028 and will be prepared to store and handle methanol fuel.
For that tug, Zeppelin Power Norway will supply two 16-cylinder Cat 3516E engines with six sequential turbochargers to boost power, and selective catalytic reduction aftertreatment systems for NOx extraction from the exhaust and IMO Tier III compliance.
It will have Steerprop’s SP 50 WD dual-end, ducted propulsors, each able to be driven by a diesel engine and an electric motor, reducing emissions during low-load operations.
The tug’s power systems will include two double-insulated Cat 3512E variable speed gensets, a Cat 9.3 harbour generator and a Cat C4.4E emergency generator.
Riviera will host TUGTECHNOLOGY ‘27 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 19-20 May 2027. Use this link for more information and to register.
