Petrobras secures Prosafe floating accommodation for deepwater oil projects
Brazilian state energy group has secured a semi-submersible accommodation vessel from a Norwegian owner to support its deepwater oil projects
Petróleo Brasileiro (Petrobras) is negotiating a contract with Norwegian owner Prosafe for the long-term charter of semi-submersible accommodation vessel Safe Notos.
Prosafe said its dynamically positioned (DP3) semi-submersible safety and maintenance support vessel was declared the winner of a bidding process for a four-year contract, due to commence in September 2026.
The Oslo, Norway-listed owner said the contract award and timing for Safe Notos was “subject to a formal process during which Petrobras is under no obligation to conclude a contract and other bidders may appeal.” If a contract is awarded, it could have a total value of around US$204M and begin soon after Safe Notos finishes its current contract with Petrobras that started in Q3 2022.
“The tender process with Petrobras resulted in Safe Notos being best placed, and after a qualification and negotiation phase, we are pleased to be declared the winner,” said Prosafe chief executive Terje Askvig.
“The contract, if awarded, demonstrates the market is strong in Brazil, with charter rates significantly increasing from those in the recent past.”
Safe Notos can accommodate up to 500 people, has extensive recreation facilities, a large crane capacity, a large open deck and a telescopic gangway.
“Prosafe will continue to be a leading provider of accommodation, safety and maintenance support vessels in Brazil, and is well positioned to increase its market share through its valued partnership with Petrobras, with units capable of meeting all the requirements set out by both Petrobras and regulators.”
Safe Notos is a 2016-built enhanced GustoMSC Ocean 500 vessel with six 3.7-MW azimuth thrusters, 31,328 kW of installed generator power, an open deck area of approximately 1,500 m², and 50-tonne and 300-tonne Liebherr electro-hydraulic cranes.
Petrobras uses semi-submersible accommodation vessels to support commissioning and to maintain its growing fleet of floating oil production storage and offloading units in the Campos and Santos basins offshore Brazil.
