Pioneer Bulk pushes large bulker buying spree past US$200M in two years

The company’s latest addition is 2019-built, 208,572-dwt Port Ellen, formerly known as Mineral Hiroshige. Built at Japan’s Imabari Shipbuilding, the vessel reportedly changed hands in late June for about US$64M. Port Ellen has already been added to Pioneer Bulk’s published fleet list.

This follows the purchase of 2010-built Capesize Mount Song, renamed Highland Park, which joined the fleet in April. Based on Equasis data, Pioneer Bulk has spent more than US$200M acquiring five Capesize/Newcastlemax bulk carriers since 2023.

According to the company’s website, Pioneer Bulk now controls a fleet of 13 bulk carriers – six Capesize/Newcastlemax vessels and seven Supramaxes. The company forms part of Pioneer Logistics, which also operates Pioneer Tanker (crude oil transport) and Pioneer Line (multi-purpose ships). The group also operates branches in China.

S&P and newbuilding trends

The latest weekly report from Xclusiv Shipbrokers shows that Capesizes and Newcastlemaxes have experienced the sharpest declines in the dry bulk sale and purchase (S&P) market in 2025. From January to mid-August, analysts recorded sales of 34 Capesizes and nine Newcastlemaxes, down 45% and 68% year-on-year, respectively.

Despite the slowdown, Chinese owners remain the driving force in the secondhand market and continue to dominate newbuilding activity. Riviera, citing BRS Shipbrokers, recently reported that Chinese orders for Capesize vessels rose 37% year-on-year in 2025, with 30 contracts signed. This surge is linked to the National Cargo, National Fleet strategy launched in 2024 by COSCO, which includes an ambitious plan to build 100 vessels.
