Portrix Logistic Software (PLS) will integrate CO2 emissions data provided by Searoutes, a startup specialising in digital services in maritime and logistics, into the company’s existing global price management (GPM) tool from January 2021
PLS chief executive Henning Voss said this came about because most of the firm’s clients are looking for “detailed carbon footprint data due to many shippers wanting to make sustainable transportation choices alongside the normal costs, transit time and reliability factors.” Searoutes was chosen as a partner because of their expertise and the granular data they provide in this field met PLS’ standards requirements.
Searoutes co-founder and chief executive Pierre Garreau said the data gathering process is challenging as the current calculation of CO2 is based on average data per trade lane following a standard methodology, which does not help industry players improve their transport carbon footprint.
Mr Garreau said “There are many criteria taken into account which influence CO2. Not only do we need access to huge volumes of data, we also need to process it to produce usable information. “
Instead, Searoutes provides more granular emissions calculations to more accurately match the services operated by the carriers rather than providing CO2 emissions per trade lane.
PLS is now integrating the Searoutes API in the GPM system making it easy to access without the need for new technology or training. Freight forwarders will be able to integrate this data into other system landscapes, such as their transport management systems.
GPM’s users will now be able to:
Mr Voss says the move is another step forward for sustainable operations. “Being able to make informed shipping decisions based not just on price and time, but also the impact various options have on the environment, adds another dimension to the process that we have long wanted to support.” he said.
The GPM is used by 12 of the top 20 freight forwarders and Mr Voss added that this information can now be shared by forwarders across the industry either via online tools, on customer invoices or reports.
