Spanish energy company Reganosa will operate and maintain the first LNG terminal in Sardinia, Italy
The terminal is in its final phase of construction in the port of Oristano, on the west of the island of Sardinia.
Italian firm Higas awarded Reganosa the operations and maintenance contract for the new terminal, making Reganosa the first company to manage three third-party LNG plants, in addition to one it owns in Mugardos, Spain.
The Higas terminal includes a jetty capable of receiving LNG vessels up to 20,000 m3, an unloading arm, six horizontal cryogenic holding tanks of 1,500 m3 each, two LNG truck loading bays, and a natural gas captive power generation system. The terminal can load more than 8,000 LNG trucks each year (some 180,000 tonnes), for distribution to smaller satellite stations across the island.
The terminal will provide Sardinia with an affordable and reliable supply of LNG. The island currently lacks access to natural gas and only a small number of industrial customers receive LNG by truck, which is brought to the island by ferry.
Since 2015, Reganosa has expanded its international presence with the creation of Reganosa Services to provide the knowledge and experience of the group in studies, project designs, consulting, engineering, and asset management.
Over the last four years, the group has provided services in 15 countries including Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Germany, Spain, Mozambique, India, Japan, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Italy with its involvement covering all the phases of development of a project, from viability studies to commercial operation.
Reganosa said it has nearly tripled its staff in the last five years. The group either already manages or will manage imminently three kinds of LNG terminals: floating in Tema, Ghana; onshore at Mugardos and Oristano; and mixed, at Delimara, Malta. These facilities have a wide range of storage facilities from 9,000 m3 to 300,000 m3.
With the Sardinia terminal, the group will enter the small-scale segment. The facilities at the Sardinia terminal expected to be operational in H1 2021.
