RWE, EnBW secure PPAs for electricity from offshore wind

PPAs are important because they provide industrial and commercial customers with long-term price stability and planning certainty, enabling them to actively contribute to the transformation of the energy system. For the technology sector in particular, where energy demand continues to grow due to digitalisation and AI applications, long-term green power contracts are a key instrument for achieving ambitious climate goals.

RWE’s PPA with Amazon is for 110 MW from the Nordseecluster B offshore windfarm. The PPA builds on a framework agreement signed between the two companies in June 2025, under which RWE is supporting Amazon’s carbon-free energy goals and Amazon Web Services provides cloud services, AI and data analytics to RWE. 

The Nordseecluster offshore windfarm is located in the German North Sea, around 50 km north of the German island of Juist. The project is being developed in two phases: Nordseecluster A, with a total capacity of 660 MW, is currently under construction and scheduled for commissioning in early 2027. The second phase, Nordseecluster B, will contribute an additional 900 MW with commercial operation scheduled for 2029. 

RWE Supply & Trading chief commercial officer Ulf Kerstin said, “PPAs like this one with Amazon are crucial for accelerating Germany’s decarbonisation while strengthening long-term security of supply. By enabling large-scale offshore projects such as the Nordseecluster, we can bring more reliable, carbon-free electricity onto the grid and support a resilient energy system.”

The second PPA, initialled by RWE, with Lidl GB, is a five-year agreement, which has already begun. It covers an annual electricity supply of 100 GWh, which is just over 15% of Lidl GB’s national electricity requirements. 

The electricity for Lidl GB will be generated by RWE’s Gwynt y Môr offshore windfarm in the Irish Sea. Consisting of 160 wind turbines with a total capacity of 576 MW, the windfarm was commissioned in 2015.

RWE and Lidl are already working together in Germany. In spring 2023, the German retail divisions of Schwarz Group, Lidl and Kaufland signed a long-term PPA with RWE. From 2028 until 2038, RWE will supply around 250 GWh of green electricity per year to the companies from its Kaskasi offshore windfarm in the North Sea. 

The PPA between EnBW and Google is a 15-year power purchase agreement for 100 MW of offshore wind from the He Dreiht offshore windfarm. Google hopes to operate its global operations on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030, meaning that every hour of energy consumption by the company is matched hourly with an equal amount of carbon-free energy on the same grid. 

EnBW board member Peter Heydecker said the agreement with Google “sends a strong signal for the transformation of the energy market.” Mr Heydecker said that, delivering a customised PPA solution, EnBW is making a direct contribution to the decarbonisation of industry and the digital economy. “With He Dreiht and our PPA with Google, we are demonstrating that large-scale, clean energy solutions are already a reality. Together, we are helping to power innovation and progress with renewable energy,” he said.

He Dreiht is under construction in the German North Sea and will be one of the largest offshore wind projects in Europe. With an installed capacity of 960 MW, it will make a substantial contribution to Germany’s renewable energy supply. Most of the electricity generated by He Dreiht has already been secured through long-term PPAs, and EnBW is in discussions with other potential offtakers for the remaining volumes.
