RWE offshore wind boss Sven Utermöhlen to leave company

RWE’s chief technology officer Tobias Keitel will become the new chief executive of RWE Offshore Wind on 1 October 2026. Julian Garnsey, currently director of construction and project delivery, will succeed Mr Keitel as chief technology officer.

“Having built up and led the offshore wind business for 20 years, I am proud of what we have achieved together. From small beginnings with 60 MW projects to becoming one of the leading offshore wind players in the industry constructing and operating several GW, with a great team and a strong foundation for further growth,” Mr Utermöhlen said.

“For me personally, this is the right time to hand the business over for its next phase. It’s still too early for a proper farewell. We have plenty planned for the next months with our construction projects, development activities, and our operational business. Nevertheless, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the entire offshore wind team and all our partners across the industry.”

Responding, RWE chief executive Markus Krebber said Mr Utermöhlen had set the course for the company’s offshore wind business. He noted that Mr Utermöhlen will continue to support the company in an advisory role for up to 12 months.

Mr Krebber thanked Mr Utermöhlen for his contribution to the company’s success. “I have greatly appreciated working with you for so many years,” he said.

“At the same time, I am very pleased that our offshore business will be in very good hands. Tobias Keitel has strategic and operational leadership experience, and is the right person to lead our offshore business into its next phase of growth,” he said.

“I am also delighted that Julian Garnsey will step into the role of chief technology officer. Julian will further strengthen the management team and ensure continuity in a key phase of our expansion. With his experience already gained at one of our very first offshore wind construction projects more than 20 years ago, Julian is a perfect fit.”

Mr Keitel has been a member of the management board at RWE Offshore Wind since 15 September 2025. Before he joined RWE, he was president and chief executive of Voith Hydro, and held various senior positions in the industry.

Julian Garnsey has been with the RWE Group for more than 20 years and has held various senior positions in the development, engineering and construction of offshore wind projects. Together with his team, he is currently leading the construction of four offshore windfarms in four countries.
