Samskip partners with TECO 2030 to retrofit Samskip Kvitnos with hydrogen fuel cells, advancing its net-zero emissions goal and compliance with future maritime regulations
Samskip has announced its participation in the groundbreaking HyEkoTank project, a major initiative supported by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. This project represents a crucial step forward in Samskip’s ongoing efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
Central to this initiative is retrofitting Samskip’s multipurpose vessel, 2015-built, 4,900-dwt conro vessel Samskip Kvitnos with cutting-edge hydrogen fuel-cell technology developed by TECO 2030.
Samskip Kvitnos plays a pivotal role in Samskip’s operations, navigating a fixed route from Rotterdam along the Norwegian west coast to Hammerfest. This region is recognised as one of Europe’s most environmentally sensitive areas, making the retrofit project not only a technological advancement, but also a commitment to sustainable logistics.
By equipping Samskip Kvitnos with zero-emissions fuel cells, Samskip is positioning itself to meet upcoming regulations, including the FuelEU Maritime and EU Emissions Trading System.
Additionally, this move addresses the pressing need for zero emissions in the Norwegian world heritage fjords by 2030. This initiative is part of a broader series of actions taken by Samskip to reduce carbon emissions across the maritime sector.
Notably, Samskip has been at the forefront of innovation with its Seashuttle project, which is developing hydrogen-powered container ships. The company has also explored the use of biofuels, shore power and CO2 capture systems to meet its ambitious decarbonisation targets.
“We have spent years actively pursuing sustainable solutions across our fleet, and this retrofit of Samskip Kvitnos aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of shipping,” said Samskip head of vessel management Erik Hofmeester.
The HyEkoTank project stands as the largest ongoing fuel-cell retrofit effort globally, demonstrating the vast potential of hydrogen technology in reducing emissions within the maritime sector. For Samskip, this retrofit is more than just a compliance measure; it represents a strategic decision to future-proof its fleet.
Mr Hofmeester noted, “By investing in retrofitting existing vessels like Samskip Kvitnos, we are maximising the environmental impact of our operations while ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness in a rapidly evolving industry.”
The collaboration with TECO 2030 is a critical component of Samskip’s journey toward achieving net zero by 2040. TECO 2030, having recently produced its first fuel-cell stack at Narvik, is on track to launch the world’s most powerful hydrogen fuel cell in 2024.
These developments underscore the technological advancements driving the HyEkoTank project and highlight the growing momentum behind hydrogen fuel cells in the maritime industry.
Samskip’s involvement in the HyEkoTank project is further bolstered by partnerships with industry leaders such as Shell, Umoe Advanced Composites, and the Arctic University of Norway. This consortium is dedicated to implementing advanced technologies that enable zero-emissions navigation in European coastal areas and the Norwegian fjords, ensuring the protection of these regions for future generations.
The retrofit of Samskip Kvitnos is scheduled for completion in 2025 and is expected to substantially reduce emissions while maintaining operational efficiency on Samskip’s established routes.
