A South Korean conglomerate intends to use software to adjust routes used by autonomous vessels to reduce emissions and to implement digital twins for ship equipment
Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) plans to increase the application of digital technologies to ship engineering and operations to improve efficiency and safety while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
This South Korean shipbuilder intends to integrate voyage optimisation into its own platform for developing semi-autonomous ships with navigation aids to support bridge crews.
SHI also plans on developing digital twins to help predict and manage the actual performance of equipment on ships and incorporate results into future naval architecture.
In another software application, SHI will also use digital tools to conduct performance analysis based on actual operational data for vessels equipped with its wind-assisted propulsion device, Saver Wing.
All this will be undertaken under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that SHI has signed with Helsinki, Finland-headquartered Napa, which will provide the software and digital modules.
Napa’s decision-support tool Voyage Optimization will be integrated with SHI’s Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS) platform, enabling fuel-efficient routeing and passage adjustments without impacting safety or regulatory compliance.
Bridge teams working on ships with this combination could simulate and assess various routes and speed profiles, and then adjust the vessel’s course to harness favorable wind and sea conditions to lower fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
SHI will also use Napa’s operational simulation device to build digital twins of ship equipment and predict the actual performance of the ship.
Insights from these simulations will be used to verify performance from the initial stage of design into operations.
Napa will also support SHI in analysing operational data from ships fitted with Saver Wing, which generates additional thrust by using wind energy to reduce the engine power required for propulsion, which cuts fuel consumption and emissions during a voyage.
"By modelling the performance of this vessel design in the specific voyage and weather conditions they will operate, based on operational data, SHI can offer shipowners accurate efficiency projections that go beyond standard design-stage assumptions," said the shipbuilder.
This MoU builds on a joint project already underway between Napa and SHI, which started in May 2026, focused on SHI’s Saver Wing designs.
“Our customers need vessels that will remain competitive and compliant for the next 25 years, and they need confidence in the efficiency data before they sign the contract," said SHI executive vice president, Hyun Joe Kim.
“Being able to model a specific design against real operating conditions, early in the process, is a genuine advantage.”
By using Napa’s digital tools, SHI will be able to demonstrate to shipowners potential savings from Saver Wing, the SAS platform and its own ship designs.
“Shipowners are being asked to make multi-million, multi-year capital commitments without enough information on what this investment looks like,” said Napa executive vice president for ship solutions, Pekka Pakkanen.
"With this partnership, SHI will be able to answer shipowners’ questions and show exactly how their Saver Wing solution will perform at sea,” he said.
“That bridge between design and operations is what shipowners have needed, and working with SHI gives us the best possible platform to provide that.”
