A look at the volume of container ship TEU between one overseas port and another throws up some interesting data. In some cases, the same port parings share the superior volumes in both directions
The forthcoming issue of Container Shipping & Trade features an infographic on the top 20 container port pairings supplied by VesselsValue and the ranking reveals interesting information about the flow of TEU volumes between ports.
The largest port pairing is between Shenzhen in China and Singapore. As the major regional hub in the Far East, Singapore features in three of the top four port pairings and is a partner in half of the top 10 pairings.
This extends to China as a whole, which has half the ports in the top 20. Geographically, Asia and Europe dominate with no North or South American port featuring in the ranking.
The top 20 container port pairings data is also dominated by shorthaul activity. Hong Kong to Shenzhen is sixth overall but the reverse fixture is also in the top 20 at 18th position. Ranking the top 20 container port pairings by distance shows that over half of the pairings could be termed shorthaul.
The TEU volume and port distance data was supplied by VesselsValue. The infographic features in the next issue of Container Shipping & Trade. Subscribe here for your issue.
