Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has been awarded a firm order for the turbines for RWE’s 1.4-GW Sofia offshore windfarm
The project will be the first to install Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s flagship 14-MW direct drive offshore wind turbine. Offshore construction will start in 2023 with turbine installation set to commence in 2025.
Siemens Gamesa chief executive offshore Marc Becker said, “The UK is the world’s largest offshore wind market, so it is appropriate that it should be the first to install the world’s largest turbine in production, the SG 14-222 DD.
“A wind power project of this scale is possible due to the use of cutting-edge technology. Rapid innovation based on proven technology has made this leap in generating capacity possible.”
RWE has previously partnered with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy on a number of offshore wind projects.
Two further preferred supplier agreements for wind power projects employing the SG 14-222 DD turbine have also been signed, totalling 2.94 GW: the 300-MW Hai Long offshore wind project in Taiwan and the 2.64-GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project in the US.
The turbines will have a capacity of up to 15 MW in ‘Power Boost’ mode.
