Slovenian port upgrades technology for smarter operations
An Adriatic coast logistics hub is extending its digitalisation technology to improve efficiency and manage growing cargo volumes
Luka Koper has extended its partnership with a software developer as it invests to boost capacity at Slovenia’s main port.
Digital technology at the Port of Koper will be upgraded in 2026 to manage growing cargo volumes and increasing ship calls at the Adriatic logistics hub. Software will enable Luka Koper to introduce smart port operations to make port services more efficient and accelerate ship turnarounds while scaling up operations in the gateway to central and southeast Europe.
The port operator expects integrated tools to serve as the digital backbone of the port, enabling it to manage operations in real time, plan ship calls intelligently, increase throughput and better co-ordinate terminal and yard operations.
Luka Koper has extended its 25-year partnership with Seattle, US-headquartered Tideworks Technology for another 10 years to upgrade software supporting traffic control, forecasting and terminal operations.
Under the new arrangement, Tideworks will also develop application interfaces to improve data flow and connectivity between Luka Koper’s internal digital infrastructure and external partners and provide training and integration services.
“This next phase of modernisation is a strategic investment in our smart port vision,” said Luka Koper chief information officer Edvard Matkovic. “By upgrading our systems and deepening collaboration with Tideworks, we are equipping teams with the tools and intelligence to manage growing volumes, deliver exceptional service, and lead in a competitive logistics landscape.”
Port of Koper has several intermodal connections and handles a diverse range of cargo, including containers, vehicles, general cargo and liquid bulk.
In 2024, Luka Koper handled 1.1M TEU, 884,000 vehicles and nearly 1,800 vessels, supported by a fleet of tugboats handling visiting ships.
Luka Koper has a joint venture, Adria Tow, with Italian owner Ocean SRL to operate tugs in Koper and in Bar, Montenegro, to assist tankers, car carriers, container ships, bulk carriers, reefers, cruise ships and ferries.
Adria Tow’s latest fleet addition was in 2023 when new tugboat Ares started operating in Koper following its construction by Armon Shipyards in Spain. This 475-gt, 32-m tug has a beam of 14 m, a draught of 6 m, a bollard pull of 75 tonnes and a maximum speed of 14 knots.
