Software has been developed for rapid virtual prototyping and risk assessment to improve ship design in Europe
A consortium of companies and research organisations have completed testing ship lifecycle software solutions (SHIPLYS) to reduce the time and cost of designing and producing vessels.
This software platform improves rapid virtual prototyping and allows naval architects to factor in lifecycle cost analysis. It also enables environmental assessments, risk assessments and end-of-life considerations at the very early design stages when only limited data is available.
SHIPLYS was developed and tested in a three-year project that started in September 2016. It involves 12 partners* from seven European countries and was led by UK-based TWI Ltd.
These partners built the platform to integrate applications used in early ship design with analysis and assessment tools.
They developed multi-criterion decision analysis techniques, considered vessel operator requirements and ship lifecycles.
SHIPLYS partners used design cases to identify problems in ship design and collected data and parameters for early ship design and lifecycle cost analysis.
The platform was built based on the existing ISO 10303 application activity model and incorporated risk and environmental aspects.
SHIPLYS was then tested in two training workshops to garner feedback from designers and shipyards.
The first workshop was held in June 2019 in Varna, Bulgaria. It was attended by representatives from Bulgarian shipyards, design technical offices and universities. The second workshop was held in July in Vigo with stakeholders from Spain.
These tested and verified the software and applications within the SHIPLYS platform, completing the research and development project.
This three-year project was partially funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
