Stena RoRo has ordered a 10th E-Flexer ferry from CMI Jinling (Weihai) shipyard following a charter agreement with Canadian operator Marine Atlantic
To date, Stena RoRo has ordered 10 large RoPax vessels of the E-Flexer type, five of which have now been delivered. The company has an option for additional vessels from CMI Jinling (Weihai) Shipyard.
“Marine Atlantic is a former customer of ours,” said Stena RoRo managing director Per Westling. “We delivered one ferry in 2000 and two more in 2010 to Marine Atlantic, all of which are still in service. We are extremely pleased to be able to continue to deliver high-quality ships to this important customer.”
"Our focus is on adapting ship design to our customers’ specific wishes and in this case, our E-Flexer platform is very well suited, as it meets the customer’s requirements for an optimal hull form combined with efficient dual-fuel engines and a battery-hybrid solution to minimise emissions"
These ships are among the world’s most modern and efficient ropax vessels. The first three vessels started to operate on the Irish Sea in 2020 and 2021. The series combines cargo and passenger capabilities and are substantially larger than today’s standard ferries. This particular vessel will be 203 m long and can accommodate 1,100 passengers and crew.
“We are excited to begin the countdown towards accepting the delivery of a new charter vessel for our service. We look forward to working with our partner in this project, Stena RoRo, a leading innovator in the roll on/roll off cargo and passenger ferry market globally,” said Marine Atlantic president and chief executive Murray Hupman.
The ship, when delivered, will run in eastern Canada between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Delivery from the shipyard is expected in 2024.
