Svitzer has returned to Turkey-based shipbuilder Med Marine for a new 23-m harbour tug to operate in its tug fleet in Germany from the end of this year
Med Marine has already begun constructing this MED-A2360-series tug at its Eregli Shipyard and expects it will be ready for sea trials in November.
This is the second time Svitzer has turned to Med Marine in the past year, having ordered two ice-class tugs for its Scandinavian fleet for delivery in 2021.
“Shortly, the new acquisition will join our growing business in Scandinavia and Germany where the design is very well suited to our needs,” said Svitzer managing director for the Scandinavia and Germany cluster Mattias Hellström.
“Together with our customers and crews, we look forward to welcoming the new tug which was actually built next to the two ice-class tugs we are expecting next year,” he said.
Med Marine has built this newbuild tug, hull number ER80, to a Robert Allan RAmparts 2300-MM design. It will have bollard pull of 60 tonnes and top speed of around 12 knots from a pair of Caterpillar Cat 3512 diesel engines, each developing 1,765 kW of power at 1,800 rpm. These drive two Kongsberg-supplied US205 SP20 azimuthing thrusters with fixed pitch propeller of 240 cm diameter.
Med Marine installed two Caterpillar C4.4 generator sets, producing 86 kW of electrical power, and a fire-fighting system with 1,400 m3/hr pump.
Svitzer’s new tug will also have deck machinery including a Toimil T-10500M crane with 8-m reach and 10 tonnes capacity, and a THR Marine towing winch on the fore deck.
Med Marine is building two ice-breaking tugs for Svitzer’s Scandinavian fleet to a TundRA 3000 design, ready for delivery in Q1 2021. These will be ready for the extreme winter conditions encountered in northern Scandinavian ports.
Svitzer operates a fleet of more than 430 vessels and has 4,000 employees worldwide.
