South Korean manufacturer Techcross’ ECS-HYCHLOR has joined the list of 32 ballast water treatment systems type-approved by the US Coast Guard
The Coast Guard Marine Safety Centre has issued its 32nd US Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System type-approval certificate to Techcross Inc after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type-approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.
The treatment principle of the Techcross ECS-HYCHLOR ballast water management system consists of filtration and electrolysis during uptake and neutralisation at discharge. This approval covers models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 300 m3/hour and 8,000 m3/hour. The USCG type-approval lists the operational limitations as:
The USCG type-approval certification also stipulates that the ECS-HYCHLOR BWMS with the ’EX’ pre-fix is approved for fitment on US-flag vessels and approved for installation in hazardous locations on a US-flag vessel and may also be installed in hazardous locations on non-US flag vessels.
Earlier this year, Techcross pre-empted any potential conflicts over intellectual property rights or breach of patents disputes by purchasing the patents held by Hitachi and Mitsubishi to a particular methodology for installing ballast water treatment systems. In March 2020, Techcross announced it had won an order to install eight ECS units on South Korea’s largest semi-submersible heavy transport vessel.
