Teekay Tankers has invested in digital technology and software to help its seafarers avoid fatigue and remain safe
It has digitalised work and rest management on its tanker fleet to improve safety and prevent tiredness-induced accidents, without burdening its seafarers with additional documentation or stress.
Teekay Tankers has deployed Sea Solutions’ Rest Manager application on 48 ships, enabling its seafarers to register work and rest hour data in real-time, without using a single key stroke.
Rest Manager has been installed on wall-mounted tablets in strategic locations on board these tankers. It uses facial recognition software to enable seafarers to register work and rest hours in a single process.
Teekay Tankers deputy head of ship management Captain Mukund Sharma said this technology enables better management of crew work and rest time, reducing tiredness affecting operations. “It is a well-documented fact that human error accounts for too many maritime accidents; with fatigue and overexertion being a prominent causal factor,” he said.
“One of the serious pain-points for seafarers on board vessels and for shoreside organisations supporting global fleets is how to avoid fatigue for all crew members,” said Capt Sharma. He added another challenge was “staying compliant and at same time managing the rest and work hours efficiently on board”.
Teekay Tankers was seeking an innovative way to overcome these challenges. “From this, the idea of a real-time, holistic and transparent rest/work hour management system was born,” said Capt Sharma.
Rest Manager enables vessel managers to access real-time analytics, such as safe call-out times for resting seafarers, so they can keep crew well-rested and safe on board.
Teekay Tankers worked closely with SeaSolutions to co-create this rest/work hour management tool. “Integrated face recognition features provide enhanced user interface to deliver a truly proactive compliance experience,” said Capt Sharma.
“The application is now running on 48 of our vessels, giving unprecedented insights and advantages to the crew on board.”
Sea Solutions also offers software for crewing and payroll through its onboard administrative IT solution SeaManager, provides load management tools for roro and cargo ships and the Sonata container cargo loading planner.
