Norwegian marine insurer and P&I Club Gard has issued a new urgent alert to ships in Southeast Asia highlighting the issue of petty theft incidents, which have been escalating in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
These recent attacks took place on large vessels underway in the Singapore Straits and the intention seems to be petty theft, rather than full scale theft of the cargo. Six attacks were reported during a 28 hour period. The pirates did not confront the crew or cause any damage to the ship’s property and fled as soon as they were sighted.
As a result Gard warned that crews should remain vigilant in the area, carry out risk assessments and implement appropriate measures, keep a sharp lookout for all movements of small craft, reporting any suspicious activities to the Singapore VTIS and practice anti-piracy training and procedures for the crew.
