TotalEnergies to use OranjeWind stake to produce green hydrogen

TotalEnergies will dedicate its share of the renewable electricity generated by the project to power 350 MW of electrolyser capacity that will produce green hydrogen. The electrolysers will produce approximately 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year that TotalEnergies will use to help decarbonise refineries in Northern Europe.

TotalEnergies plans to decarbonise its European refineries with hydrogen and reduce CO2 emissions by around 5M tonnes a year by 2030. It is in this context that the company intends to allocate its share in OranjeWind to produce electricity to generate green hydrogen. The green hydrogen will replace carbon-intensive hydrogen currently consumed by the company’s refineries, and avoid the emission of 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. 

OranjeWind will be built in the North Sea, 53 km off the Dutch coast. RWE won a tender to build the windfarm in 2022 as part of the Hollandse Kust West VII tender. In addition to generating green power and green hydrogen, OranjeWind will also support the stability of the Dutch grid through the use of electric boilers and battery storage. Construction of the windfarm is due to start in 2026, with full commissioning expected in early 2028.
