Traditional bulker owner M/Maritime breaks into box ships with feeder order

John Mytilineos-led shipowner has contracted HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for a pair of 2,800-TEU container vessels, with delivery scheduled for early 2028.

M/Maritime said the vessels will be built based on HHI’s eco-efficient “con-green” design and will comply with IMO Tier III emission standards. The units will also feature advanced energy-efficiency systems and increased reefer capacity, supporting both operational flexibility and commercial competitiveness.

The order reflects a broader trend of established Greek owners entering the container shipping market in recent months, particularly in the feeder segment.

In parallel, M/Maritime has further strengthened its position in the dry bulk sector. The company has entered into long-term time charter agreements for three bulk carriers under construction at Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding, Onomichi Dockyard, and Imabari Shipbuilding.

The charter agreements have durations of five to 10 years and include purchase options at the end of each period. The vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2030.

The Greek owner has long maintained close ties with Japanese shipyards, with its entire active fleet constructed in Japan.

M/Maritime currently operates a fleet of 18 bulk carriers, ranging from 30,000 to 82,000 dwt.
