Trelleborg’s marine and infrastructure division completed the successful, remote installation of its navigation and piloting technology – SafePilot Offshore – aboard a deepwater floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) operated by oil major Total in Angola
The installation is part of an upgrade of the navigation and positioning systems and buoy monitoring systems for Total E&P. As part of its plans to create more remote operations for its offshore assets, Total E&P required a strategic partner capable of supporting the installation, data integration, software uploading and commissioning of equipment.
The SafePilot Offshore software is a professional navigational system designed specifically for the oil and gas market. The iOS-based software was developed in collaboration with marine pilots worldwide and utilises touchscreen technology built on an intelligent kernel for multi-layer handling.
Trelleborg said the software provides “superior situational awareness and visibility on just one screen” to ensure a safer, more efficient operation and optimises the window of opportunity in tough navigational environments. The high-accuracy solution is easy to install and its remote installation functionality removes the need for Trelleborg team members to go into the field.
The company’s marine and infrastructure operation managing director Tommy Guldhammer Mikkelsen said, “By adopting our remote operational support and digital technology, Total E&P was able to save on operational costs and lower health and safety risks, due to reduced offshore personnel.
“The successful installation of our SafePilot Offshore solution has resulted in a new standardisation of equipment on board multiple FPSOs in the Angola area and Trelleborg has since been awarded contracts to upgrade additional Total E&P assets. This project demonstrates the level of reliability and trust between both parties; we are pleased to have assisted Total E&P with this key FPSO project in Angola.”
