The Tsakos family’s private shipping company has quietly struck again in the secondhand container vessel market, adding its largest asset to date as part of a fleet renewal programme
Tsakos Group has emerged as the new owner of 2010-built, 4,600-TEU Irenes Power, previously known as Atlantica Power. The vessel appears to be the largest container ship in its fleet.
Shipbrokers reported in late November that the vessel changed hands for around US$45M.
Oslo-based Atlantica Shipping, which had owned the ship until now, confirmed this week that it was successfully delivered to its new owners, whose identities were not revealed. Atlantica Shipping had originally taken delivery of the vessel in August 2024.
Initial shipbroking reports suggested the vessel had been acquired by the world’s largest liner operator, MSC. However, industry sources noted that the deal fell through, and the ship ultimately went to the Greek owner.
This marks the second container vessel addition to Tsakos Group’s fleet in roughly a year. Last February, Riviera reported that the Greek owner had added 2014-built Irenes Southern.
Tsakos appears to be actively renewing its container fleet. Shipbroking reports from late 2025 indicate the group divested 2001-built, 3,700-TEU Irenes Resolve for around US$23M.
According to the company’s website, Tsakos currently oversees 10 container vessels built between 2001 and 2024, excluding the latest deals.
The group is one of Greece’s largest shipowners, controlling a diverse fleet that includes tankers, LNG carriers, bulk carriers, and container vessels.
Firm secondhand activity
Container vessel secondhand activity remained robust throughout 2025, according to MB Shipbrokers, with over 200 units changing hands across most segments.
“With modern tonnage in short supply and charter rates holding up, buyer interest turned toward vintage units, which remained in consistent demand throughout the year,” analysts noted.
MSC was once again the most active buyer, completing around 50 acquisitions to steadily expand its fleet across vessels of various sizes and ages. CMA CGM followed with over 20 deals, maintaining a more selective approach across segments, MB Shipbrokers added.
