Seven US sailors’ bodies have been found after a container ship chartered by NYK Line collided with a US warship.
ACX Crystal – chartered by NYK and owned by Dainichi-Invest Corporation – collided with US Navy destroyer USS Fitzgerald 20km off the coast of Shimoda, Shizuoka prefecture in Japan. The incident happened on 17 June at around 1.30 am Japan Standard Time.
There were no injuries onboard ACX Crystal, or oil spill from the vessel.
NYK Line said in a statement: “Our deep thoughts and concerns go out to the families and friends of those who have so tragically lost their lives on the USS Fitzgerald and our hopes for a speedy recovery for those injured and in hospital following the collision.
“NYK and the shipowner are fully co-operating with an investigation being conducted by the Japan Coast Guard. More information will be provided when known.”
ACX Crystal was built in 2008 and has a crew of 20 seafarers. The 29,093gt ship is under the flag of the Republic of the Philippines.
