Finnish scrubber manufacturer Valmet has introduced a new marine water treatment system for marine scrubber and exhaust gas recirculation systems
Valmet’s marine water treatment system consists of four different modules that can be easily fitted in different vessel layouts. The layout flexibility allows the water treatment system to be installed on both newbuildings and retrofits.
The company said introducing the water treatment system is part of a continuous development of marine products geared towards more sustainable ship transport, adding that the new system is the most environmentally friendly water treatment unit available on the market.
The unit’s design is marked by low chemical consumption, little fresh water consumption and minimal maintenance which reduces costs. Daily cleaning of the unit is done with seawater while weekly cleaning is done with fresh water and a small chemical dose.
Valmet product sales manager, marine emission control Lishan Wu said “With the help of Valmet DNA automation system, the water treatment solution ensures flexibility and reliability in optimising the water treatment process.”
The unit has been designed to handle high total solids content without clogging the membranes. The bleed off water from closed loop circulation is concentrated, and when high, approximately 10-15% total solids content is reached, the concentrated sludge is pumped into the sludge tank. High total solids content leads to a low volume of sludge and will result in lowered bunkering costs in port.
Valmet senior manager, sales and technology, marine emission control Anssi Mäkelä said the developer has leveraged its existing knowledge in designing the new unit.
“Our expertise from other land-based industries and decades of development work have led us to this innovative solution for vessels. Our target is to support our customers in their business in a more sustainable way, as well as make it possible for them to conduct responsible business, emissions controlled. At the moment, it is extremely important to support maritime businesses towards lower emissions. This technology contributes clearly to these aims,” he said.
