Video: LPG cargo leak forces halt to operations in Guatemalan port
An LPG leak during cargo discharge briefly halted terminal and vessel movements at Puerto Quetzal before operations resumed, according to Guatemala’s defence ministry
A liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leak at Puerto Quetzal in Guatemala led to the temporary suspension of operations at specialised terminals after an incident during cargo discharge from Norway-flagged tanker Nice.
Guatemala’s Ministry of National Defence’s report said the National Maritime Authority activated the relevant alerts after the incident began at about 16:00 on 4 March 2026.
It stated 2003-built, 44,600-m3 LPG/chemical gas carrier Nice (IMO No: 9247810) was berthed at the Zeta Gas terminal when, during gas cargo discharge, a valve broke, and LPG began to escape.
The report said the release lasted about 60 seconds.
Puerto Quetzal port captaincy ordered operations to be suspended at all terminals, restricted vessel arrivals and departures, evacuated personnel to safe areas and moved to verify and contain the leak.
After the incident was dealt with, Guatemala’s Ministry of National Defence called for calm and stated that the situation had been brought under control, there was no risk to the population, and no adverse health effects.
Once the relevant technical criteria had been met, operations at Puerto Quetzal’s terminals were reactivated.
