Viking inks deal for at least two new ocean cruise ships

Fincantieri and Viking have announced they have signed contracts for the construction of two new cruise ships, which will build on the characteristics of the previous Viking ships built in Fincantieri’s Italian shipyards, with delivery scheduled for 2030.

The value of the agreement has been defined as large and Fincantieri and Viking have reached an agreement for an additional four ships under option, with deliveries scheduled between 2031 and 2032.

The new units will be built in compliance with the latest environmental standards and navigation regulations and will be equipped with the most advanced safety systems. They will also boast cutting-edge innovations, developed thanks to the constant collaboration between Fincantieri and Viking for the development of green fuels and sustainable zero-emissions energy generation systems. With a gross tonnage of about 54,300 tonnes, the small cruise ships will accommodate 998 passengers on board in 499 cabins.

The long-standing partnership between Fincantieri and Viking, which began in 2012, can now count a total of 22 ships, including the two expedition units built by the Norwegian subsidiary Vard.

Fincantieri chief executive officer and general manager Pierroberto Folgiero commented, "This new order represents a further step in our collaboration with Viking,  that allows us to strengthen our orderbook and ensures further depth of work for our shipyards in the long term, positioning us at the forefront of leading the industry towards the energy transition."
