South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has awarded Wärtsilä a contract to deliver a cargo handling system for two very large ethane carriers (VLEC)
The contract includes an option for an additional vessel. Both 98,000-m3 vessels are under construction and will be equipped with Wärtsilä’s custom multi-cargo reliquefaction unit and a high-pressure ethane fuel supply system. The system will feature the newest version of Operim, the remote monitoring and diagnosis tool developed by Wärtsilä.
HHI chief technology officer Jae-Eul Kim said “Wärtsilä is a leading provider of cargo handling systems and we are very confident with their designs and performance, so selecting Wärtsilä will ensure timely delivery with the highest quality standards for these unique vessels.”
Wärtsilä director of sales and marketing Kjell Ove Ulstein said “This order again emphasises Wärtsilä’s position as a market leader for the supply of gas carrier cargo systems in general, and VLEC cargo systems in particular. These are advanced and very specialised vessels requiring advanced and specialised cargo handling systems, and we very pleased to once again be selected as a trusted partner to HHI.”
This repeat order (following one placed in 2019 by HHI for the system design for three VLECs) was placed in October 2020. Wärtsilä also announced it will supply hybrid-electric engines for a series of 230-m ferries being built in China for P&O ferries.
