China Classification Society (CCS) has approved Wärtsilä’s exhaust gas cleaning (EGC) system
This follows an order for the system from Chinese shipbuilder Dalian Shipbuilding Industry for installation on board New Treasure, a new VLCC. New Treasure is being built for Associated Maritime of Hong Kong, part of the China Merchants Energy Shipping group, the largest VLCC owner in China and a leading crude oil tanker operator.
Full-scale testing was carried out after the system’s shipboard installation was completed, and the relevant data was reviewed and reported by Dalian Maritime University, which acted as an independent third party.
The process involved reviewing the design and checking the fabrication of the scrubber tower itself to verify it is in accordance with all the CCS class and quality requirements.
With the sulphur cap now in force, demand for scrubbers is set to rise. Wärtsilä said the approval marks a significant breakthrough for the system in the Chinese market.
Wärtsilä Marine director exhaust treatment Jan Othman said “This is a success story that clearly endorses the efficiency and quality of our EGC systems. Having CCS type-approval now means this product can be installed on any CCS-class ship without the need for further emissions testing.”
The order for the Wärtsilä system was placed in August 2018 with the equipment delivered to the yard July 2019.
