Wärtsilä has signed an MoU tied to a licence and co-operation agreement with UK-based Anemoi Marine Technologies for the future sales and servicing of its rotor sails within its propulsion business
As part of the agreement, Anemoi’s rotor sails will soon be offered as part of Wärtsilä’s marine portfolio. Wärtsilä hopes that by offering wind propulsion options the company can further facilitate compliance with IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).
The company said the collaboration will enable the adoption of wind-assisted propulsion for most marine vessel types, with the immediate focus likely to be on dry and wet bulk vessels. Wärtsilä will promote the technology for both newbuild projects and for retrofitting to existing ships.
Anemoi has developed a rotor sail system that offers fuel saving benefits to a range of vessel types and sizes, including geared and gearless bulk carriers, tankers and other vessels, both as newbuilds and as retrofits.
The sails are comprised of vertical cylinders which, when driven to rotate, harness wind energy to propel ships. These mechanical sails use the magnus effect of producing thrust by creating a pressure differential using a spinning object to provide additional thrust to vessels.
Anemoi Marine Technologies chief executive Kim Diederichsen said “Our patented designs overcome operational constraints such as air draft and cargo handling, making the technology suitable for the majority of shipping sectors. As the industry focuses on emissions reduction targets and energy saving, we are collaborating with Wärtsilä to strengthen our offering and facilitate the global uptake of our rotor sails by offering clients a full end-to-end solution including sales, supply and lifecycle support.”
Wärtsilä also has a service co-operation agreement with Norsepower, a major provider of rotor sails for commercial vessels. Earlier this year ferry operator Scandilines installed a Norsepower rotor sail aboard its Baltic passenger ship MV Copenhagen.
