Renowned energy and transport expert Dr Tristan Smith of University College London shares with Tanker Shipping & Trade editor Edwin Lampert his view that that green house gas emissions present industry with both its biggest challenge and biggest opportunity. He acknowledges that the pathway to complying with 2020 fuel legislation is unclear but argues that LNG is a 'short term transition fuel rather than a panacea.' He concludes by proposing a multi-speed, multi-regional approach to regulation. "We know for certain that if we wait too long that we are going to end up very much behind the curve meaning the sector and the globe in general will have to undertake a much more dramatic decarbonisation. If we push everything to the 2020s and 2030s we make the problem harder to solve which makes [bringing about decarbonisation] more painful for industry and populations."
