Spain’s Windar Renovables, a leading manufacturer of wind turbine towers and foundations, has confirmed it is investing in a new tower factory for the Polish offshore wind market
Windar Renovables will begin constructing the facility later in 2022. The 120,000-m2 facility will include covered areas for welding, surface treatment and assembly work, and an area to store finished components. The company said its total investment in the Polish plant will be €80M (US$91M). The factory will create 450 direct jobs once it is fully operational.
The Polish plant will have capacity to manufacture 100 towers annually and has been designed to accommodate the manufacturing of new-generation offshore wind turbines for turbines in the 14-16-MW size range. It will be capable of series production of sections of up to 450 tonnes, 10 m in diameter and 50 m in length.
Production is expected to start in early 2024. Initially, the target market will be the Polish offshore wind sector, as well as other countries in the Baltic and North Sea, where the demand is expected to significantly increase in coming years.
Poland is an emerging market for offshore wind energy and the first 5.9 GW have recently been auctioned, with some of the largest developers in the wind industry among the successful bidders.
The first Polish offshore windfarms are expected to start generating clean energy by 2025. Auctions for the second phase of projects, which is estimated at about 5 GW, are planned to take place between 2025 and 2027.
