The UK is facing a growing challenge to maintain its reputation as a leading maritime training nation. Training will be a key component in addressing its shortage of trained seafarers and the UK Chamber of Shipping has called for increased support for maritime training.
Modal Training, a new independent centre of excellence for maritime training, has recently opened in Immingham on the east coast of England. Modal Training is jointly funded by Grimsby Institute and the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, and is located in a purpose-designed 5,696m² facility.
Modal Training is offering a comprehensive range of integrated ship, offshore vessel, engine and control room, high voltage, dynamic positioning, radar and vessel traffic service simulators from Norway’s Kongsberg Maritime. Powered by Kongsberg’s latest K-Sim technology, they will enable training to be provided on all vessel types including offshore support vessels, tugs, tankers, and cruise ships.
Training facilities include a Class A full bridge K-Sim offshore vessel simulator, with a fore and aft bridge, and a K-Pos DP2 dynamic positioning and anchor handling system. It is one of just three in the world to be configured in this way for offshore training. Others are located in Norway and Singapore.
Sam Whitaker, a director of Modal Training, said: “We listened to leading companies from across the maritime, offshore and renewables industries, and created an extensive suite of equipment designed to meet their real-world training requirements exactly. Kongsberg is a global leader in marine technology, and its simulators are widely regarded as the finest available in the world today. Feedback on our simulation suite from the industry has been fantastic so far.”
