Singapore shipbuilder Singapore Technologies Marine (ST Marine), part of Singapore Technologies Engineering (ST Engineering), has taken a significant step towards fulfilling contracts for the construction of naval patrol vessels for Oman with the interim delivery and acceptance for a third patrol vessel, Sadh, and the naming ceremony for the fourth vessel Khassab.
The contract for the design and build of the four Al-Ofouq Class of PVs was awarded by the Ministry of Defense of the Sultanate of Oman through a competitive international tender in April 2012. These four vessels will replace four patrol vessels commissioned in the early 1980s.
The Al-Ofouq class of patrol vessels measure 75m in length and are designed for a variety of maritime and homeland security missions such as undertaking extended surveillance patrols.
Ng Sing Chan, president, ST Marine, said: “Without the unwavering support from the leadership of the Royal Navy of Oman and the resident project team, we would not be where we are today. I look forward to the next partnership with the Royal Navy of Oman.
“As the Al-Ofouq programme draws to a close with the fourth vessel scheduled to leave Singapore in May 2016, ST Marine will not rest on its laurels but will continue to relentlessly keep our pace to ensure a smooth finish for this wonderful programme.”
In January 2016 ST Engineering announced new orders worth about US$344 million for its shiprepair and engineering business groups. The contracts cover major upgrades and conversion, maintenance and repair of vessels in the naval and commercial segments. They include patrol vessels, a pipelaying vessel, an accommodation and work barge, oil and chemical tankers, and a cruise ship. The new orders also include logistics management services. These projects are being carried out in the Singapore facilities over the next two to six years.
