The 81st session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) is gearing up to tackle key environmental concerns
On Monday 18 March 2024, MEPC will kick off with the adoption of the agenda, followed by discussions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships and identifying and safeguarding special areas and emission control areas.
Simultaneously, deliberations will focus on amendments to mandatory instruments.
Tuesday’s agenda, on 19 March, is packed with deliberations on enhancing energy efficiency, curbing air pollution, controlling harmful aquatic organisms in ballast water, and reviewing the decisions of other relevant bodies.
Wednesday 20 March will see MEPC addressing follow-up actions from the Action Plan to combat marine plastic litter, pollution prevention and response measures, reports from sub-committees, and updates on technical co-operation for marine environment protection.
Thursday 21 March will focus on the application of the Committees’ method of work and any additional business matters that arise.
Finally, on Friday 22 March, MEPC will finalise its work programme for this session and consider the draft report of the 81st session.
