DNV is a Gold Sponsor of the International Chemical & Product Tanker Conference 2024 and SVP and business director tankers, maritime Catrine Vestereng will be taking part in the Navigating the IMO GHG regulatory maze panel discussion
Tanker owners are facing complex compliance considerations as IMO works towards a concrete agreement on mid-term greenhouse gas emissions reduction measures by 2025.
These include the differing viewpoints on flexibility provisions and economic instruments, and how these will be reconciled.
Ms Vestereng noted that at IMO, the member states need to come together and figure out which elements are the most important to them and find a balanced solution. The basic economic elements need to be ’solved’ after next MEPC in October to be able to develop the detailed elements.
“We anticipate the comprehensive impact assessment will be an important piece of information into this negotiation,” said Ms Vestereng.
From a technological perspective, no one solution will meet the scale and timeline required.
“We need to bring all available solutions to the table to reach the ambitions, such as biofuels, e-fuels, onboard CCS and energy efficiency,” said Ms Vestereng.
Green corridors offer a route to tackle emissions and speed-up the process. “By focusing on green corridors – you could eat the elephant in smaller piece – and it could be easier to create a good collaboration among the stakeholders,” she said.
