Cadeler has signed a contract to install a new crane on the vessel Wind Orca and retain the option for delivery of a crane on another vessel, Wind Osprey
Cadeler has contracted NOV to upgrade Wind Orca with an improved crane that meets future demand for best-in-class installation vessels.
The company noted that the offshore wind market is moving towards installing larger next-generation wind turbines with capacity ratings exceeding 14 MW, which require improved crane lifting capacity from vessels.
The new crane for Wind Orca is expected to be completed in March 2024. As part of the contract, Cadeler has also secured an option to replace the crane on Wind Osprey.
The total cost of the contract for replacing both cranes is US$102M, including decommissioning the old cranes, as well as the design, manufacturing, and installation of the new cranes. The cost will be financed by the company’s cash flow over the years from 2021 to 2024.
The new crane will have a lifting capacity of 1,600 tonnes at a radius of 40 m, with the main hook at a height of 159.7 m above the main deck.
This is a substantial upgrade of the vessel’s capacity today (1,200 tonnes lifting capacity at a radius of 31 m) and will enable installation of next-generation offshore wind turbines.
