The first fruits of the consolidation of training services under the Ocean Technologies Group banner are beginning to appear
The Transpetrol case study on crew evaluation, training and monitoring was based on the training programmes of Seagull Maritime AS of Norway. Seagull Maritime, along with its one-time rivals Videotel, Coex AS, Marlins, MTS, and Tero Marine, is now part of the Ocean Technologies Group.
Building on these multiple brands, Ocean Technologies Group introduced its new maritime learning platform by combining the strengths of multiple training resources.
This platform became available to shipowners, operators, managers and seafarers at the end of January 2021. It draws on more than 100 years of combined experience in providing quality training materials to over a million seafarers. This follows Ocean Technologies’ investment in software, content and re-engineering its user experience design.
The Ocean Learning Platform is an enterprise-level maritime learning management system designed to unite shore-based and onboard training initiatives, online and across mobile devices.
“The new Ocean Platform offers a compelling, engaging and comprehensive learning experience for the seafarer,” said Ocean Technologies chief revenue officer Johan Gustafsson. “For the first time these learning brands are available to the combined customer base on a single platform, delivered by a unified account team and streamlined contract.”
Ocean Learning Platform offers blended learning, assessment and competency management solutions. It combines e-learning with resources for hands-on training to improve knowledge, skills and behavioural development. There is a media-rich library of training programs, video and remote learning courses, with gamified content to further enhance crew engagement.
“It was the right time to offer our experience to the industry”
“Our new platform highlights the group’s commitment to move beyond the traditional management of training results for compliance purposes,” said Ocean Technologies chief executive Manish Singh, adding, “[it] delivers transformational change in which the performance of seafarer and vessel can be measured and improved through greater data capture and data-driven decision making.”
In mid-2021, Ocean Technologies took the consolidation of brands one-step further through an outreach programme combining the insights and experience of its in-house experts, partners and customers using social media posts, blogs, editorial and free workshops.
These are available as a series of competency packs comprising of specific proficiencies across key competency areas that can be used to help build and assess seafarer knowledge, skills and behaviours.
“Now that we have launched our new Ocean Learning Platform, we felt it was the right time to offer our experience to the industry and help demystify what can be a daunting topic for many ship operators,” said Ocean Technologies Group group creative director Raal Harris.
“By offering our years of experience in the form of free blogs, articles and workshops, we will dispel many of the common myths and misnomers by providing the most compelling reasons why having a CMS on board will reap real benefits in terms of assurance, crew development, compliance and performance,” said Mr Harris.
He added: “At Ocean Technologies Group we have a proven track record of helping world-leading companies build up the knowledge and skills of their teams through our competency management system and can work with companies to implement a ready-made set of competencies or develop a bespoke system tailored to the needs of their business.”
