DEME Offshore and Penta-Ocean Construction, Japan’s leading marine contractor, have formed a joint venture (JV) to focus on the construction of offshore windfarms in Japan
The JV brings together DEME Offshore’s marine engineering expertise and experience in the offshore wind industry and Penta-Ocean’s marine construction technology and experience.
The partners are currently in the process of establishing a joint venture company, whereby 51% of the shares will be owned by Penta-Ocean and 49% by DEME Offshore.
New regulations facilitating the development of the offshore wind industry in Japan have been introduced by the Japanese Government. The first round of auctions for offshore wind are expected to take place later this year.
Japan has ambitious targets to develop 10 GW of offshore wind power by 2030. While the country has very favourable wind conditions, it also has challenging subsoils, which can be a mixture of sand and rock.
DEME Offshore business unit director Niels van Berlaer said, “These complex conditions often mean that drilling expertise is necessary at offshore windfarm. Our two companies have the skills inhouse, given their dredging activities.
“By bringing these two leading companies together, we believe we can make a significant contribution to the long-term development of the offshore wind sector in Japan. Demonstrating our confidence in the vast potential of the Japanese market, and our willingness to support the sector, we are also considering bringing DEME Offshore equipment to Japan.”
Penta-Ocean head of offshore wind Tetsunori Ohshimo said, “The JV will combine technology and experience from Europe and Japan.
“I am confident that the collaboration between the two companies will contribute greatly to the construction of offshore windfarms and that we have the capabilities needed to tackle Japan’s challenging metocean and seismic conditions, as well as the complex seabed conditions.”
