Industry leaders, forward-thinking vessel owners, innovative offshore support vessels and lifetime achievements were celebrated at the recent Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference 2023.
During a gala dinner at the end of the first day of the event, winners accepted a series of awards that recognised their achievements in the sector.
ADNOC Logistics & Services won the OSJ Shipowner of the Year Award 2023, sponsored by V.Ships Offshore, for its critical role in enabling the UAE’s oil and gas sector to raise production while reducing emissions.
The company supports more than 100 global clients in over 50 countries, with fully integrated technology and logistics solutions and a full suite of port management services. It supports ADNOC’s offshore network at more than 70 offshore locations through its active OSV fleet.
Norwegian vessel owner Island Offshore and Brazil-headquartered Starnav Serviços Marítimos were shortlisted nominees.
OSJ’s Offshore Energy Vessel of the Year Award 2023 was presented to Windcat Workboats for its hydrogen-powered Hydrocat 48, which provides zero-emissions support for the offshore renewables industry in Belgium.
Windcat and CMB.Tech developed Hydrocat 48 as the world’s first hydrogen-powered crew transfer vessel, with dual-fuel MAN engines and a hydrogen injection system.
Edda Wind’s construction support vessel, Edda Breeze, was shortlisted for its hydrogen-ready, diesel-electric power system, onboard energy storage and permanent magnet electromotors.
Another shortlisted nominee was Seacat Services’ crew transfer vessel, Seacat Columbia, a BARTech 30 design vessel built at Diverse Marine Shipyard on the Isle of Wight.
The Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by DNV, went to Eidesvik Offshore’s retired president and chief executive Jan Fredrik Meling.
DNV segment director for special ships, Arnstein Eknes, presented the award to Mr Meling, who spent 16 years at the helm of the Norwegian OSVowner. During his leadership, Eidesvik achieved operational excellence and built a reputation as a pioneer in the use of new ‘green’ energy carriers in the North Sea.
Mr Meling guided the company through an environmental transition, adopting LNG fuels, hybrid propulsion and batteries for its vessels.
Solstad Offshore chief executive, Lars Peder Solstad, was presented with the OSJ Industry Leader Award 2023 by sponsor, Uptime International’s director for sales and marketing, Svein Ove Haugen. Mr Solstad has led the Norwegian OSV owner through a long period of tough market conditions and consolidation to become one of the sector’s innovators in terms of new markets and the green transition.
Solstad has become an expert on saving costs by lowering fuel consumption and reducing emissions, achieving 21% in fuel savings to date through its Solstad Green Operations programme.
For this programme, Solstad Offshore won the ESG Award 2023, sponsored by Caterpillar. Solstad Offshore has set a goal of complete carbon neutrality by 2050. It plans to reach a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 compared with 2008, applying a combination of operational measures, battery energy storage, hydrogen and ammonia fuel pilots and newbuilds. Norwegian energy group, Equinor, was also shortlisted for the ESG award for its portfolio of offshore renewable projects and its support for OSV owners investing in alternative fuels and emissions-reduction technologies.
Windcat Offshore was the winner of the Offshore Renewables Award 2023 for its Elevation series of hydrogen-powered construction support and operations vessels (CSOVs) that are working in the Belgian offshore renewables sector.
Windcat beat other shortlisted nominees, Farra Marine - a new supplier of crew transfer vessels to the offshore renewables sector - and Acta Marine and Ulstein Design & Solutions, which were nominated for the Ulstein SX216 methanol-fuelled CSOV.
OSJ’s Innovation of the Year Award 2023, sponsored by Corvus Energy, was awarded to Seaonics for its all-electric-controlled motion-compensated (ECMC) crane. This vehicle has zero emissions and higher energy efficiency during lifting and handling operations compared to a compensated crane operating on hydraulic oil.
The crane is self-contained, with a control system based on proven control logic and application, and has low weight. The boom, slew and telescope controls are all electric driven and dynamically used to perform the 3D compensation of the crane tip.
Seaonics fought off stiff competition from other shortlisted nominees, P&O Maritime Logistics for FlexDelivery, Ulstein Design & Solutions, for its twin-stern design, and VPS for Core, which analyses carbon intensity from vessel operations.
The winner of the Environmental Award 2023 was Opsealog, which won out over three other shortlisted nominees: Seacor Marine; CSM Energy; and Thome Ship Management.
The Environmental Award was awarded to a company, project or product that has made a significant contribution to reducing the environmental footprint of the OSV industry. Opsealog won this award for its Marinsights and Streamlog ultimate package.
Marinsights is a performance management tool for monitoring and optimising marine offshore operations. Its software analyses operational patterns and identifies inefficiencies in OSV operations. Streamlog is a digital logbook that streamlines daily reporting and vessel activity monitoring for crews. It replaces manual processes and spreadsheets, simplifying data entry, and automatically generates noon and other reports, such as waste management, product inventory, health and safety and engine running hours.
OSJ award winner ADNOC Logistics & Services has implemented Marinsights on its platform supply vessels, anchor-handling tugs and supply ships, and fast support intervention vessels in the Middle East, under a multi-year contract with Opsealog.
OSJ’s Safety Award 2023, sponsored by Vroon Offshore Services, was won by Wärtsilä for its wind turbine guard zone system. The award recognises a product that has made a difference in terms of safety of life, property and environment in an OSV operation over the last 12 months.
Wärtsilä Voyage’s SceneScan is the only targetless laser sensor available and is used in inland waterways and DP operations for precise positioning. SceneScan tracks reflections from artificial structures within the sensor’s field of view and measures their position relative to the scene. It provides position information when vessels pass under bridges and is used for station keeping during DP operations.
DNV was a shortlisted nominee for its joint industry project covering bottom impact and partially submerged conditions. This project resulted in a new framework for optimising the installation process of offshore wind turbines.
DNV won the Dynamic Positioning Award 2023, sponsored by Damen, for its data-driven verification of DP systems.
Shortlisted nominees were OneStep Power Solutions - for its automated validation algorithm that has reduced costs and increased confidence in testing across the OneStep Power ShortCut series - and Sirehna, for the development of an intelligent remote-controlled DP system.
