Using passive remote hyperspectral imaging to monitor ship plume emissions

  • The use of passive remote hyperspectral imaging data along with signal processing techniques can provide rapid and accurate estimation of ship emissions including sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide
  • This work will present the most recent emission results obtained with Telops’ hyperspectral instrument install in the port of Quebec, Canada
  • In addition, from the quantified emissions from the ship’s plume, the system can retrieve the sulphur content of the fuel used by the ship
  • The sulfur content results obtained from the hyperspectral dataset compare very well to the sulfur content in the fuel obtained from bunker delivery notes provided by the ship’s owner
  • This system offers a distinct advantage over existing, more complex, and time-consuming sulfur monitoring techniques as it does not require direct sampling of the fuel or the ship exhaust emissions

Benjamin Saute, Field Applications Engineer, Telops
