Nine CO2 storage tanks have arrived on site at Northern Lights’ Øygarden CO2 terminal
Phase One of the Northern Lights CO2 storage project is close to completion with the venture’s-CO2 carrier, Northern Pioneer, carrying out the first CO2 loading and offloading from Heidelberg Materials in Brevik and the second vessel, Northern Pathfinder, undergoing commissioning.
Phase Two, the expansion of storage capacity at Øygarden, has commenced with the delivery of nine additional CO2 storage tanks, part of the plan to increase capacity from 1.5M tonnes to at least 5.0M tonnes of CO2 per year.
Phase 2 is supported by a grant from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility for Energy and will be financed primarily through commercial investments.
The storage tanks have been manufactured in Spain by IDESA and transported to Øygarden by ship under the guidance of the Equinor Technical Service Provider (TSP) project team.
“I am happy to see the transport and offloading operation of the storage tanks has been executed in an efficient manner without any incidents. It is an important milestone for the Phase 2 project and a visible landmark at our site in Øygarden. Thanks to our contractors and Equinor colleagues that have been working hard to execute this operation”, said Equinor TSP project director for Phase 2 Knut Mathias Vestbø.
