North Sea Shipping is using UniSea software and Yxney Maritime’s Maress cloud-based decision support system to help reduce energy costs on its OSVs
This includes work on multipurpose construction vessel North Sea Giant, where the operator installed batteries to reduce fuel consumption for dynamic positioning (DP3 class) operations.
North Sea Shipping technical manager Henning Revne said during an upgrade to the DP3 system, three sets of batteries were added as spinning reserves and DP3 redundancy.
“Since their installation in April 2019, we have saved 900 tonnes of fuel, 2,650 tonnes of CO2 and 25 tonnes of NOx, exceeding our expectations,” said Mr Revne.
“To achieve this it was important to use Maress for involvement by the crew, so they could take part in this challenge,” he said.
Maress is a cloud-based digital management solution for emissions transparency and energy efficiency, according to Yxney chief executive Gjord Simen Sanna. “Maress collects, processes and displays information on vessel efficiency,” he said.
Maress displays key performance indicators, vessel and fleet efficiency and the effects of using batteries.
UniSea chief executive Kurt Roar Vilhelmsen said North Sea Shipping uses many of its apps for technical management, crewing and daily reporting. He said UniSea uses data from various sources and crew reports and displays this information on different dashboards for various job functions.
He used as an example the daily report tool in UniSea. “This can be adapted and changed throughout the day for emissions and fuel consumption, what is left in stock and engine configuration,” he said.
Daily reports can also include an onboard activity log, any reported incidents, permits-to-work and port state control inputs. “There is a fuel record report with daily inputs, including activity modes. If the vessel is in transit or on standby, this goes into fuel record report,” said Mr Vilhelmsen.
