Discover how YardScore is revolutionising shipyard ESG practices at Riviera Maritime Media’s Responsible Ship Recycling Forum 2024 in Brussels
As the shipping industry grapples with the dual challenges of sustainability and transparency, this conference in Brussels is set to shine a spotlight on innovative solutions.
Grieg Green managing director Pia Meling will take centre stage with her presentation, Shipyard transparency in the digital age: Leveraging data for sustainability.
Ms Meling explains the transformative impact of Grieg Green’s latest innovation, YardScore, stating, "YardScore provides a neutral, data-driven basis for comparing shipyards within and across countries using a standardised, transparent scale."
Grieg Green has positioned YardScore as a critical tool to bridge the significant information gaps in ship recycling, repairs and drydocking.
Ms Meling stresses the system’s comprehensive scope, "YardScore evaluates a range of practices including emissions, circularity, material flows, infrastructure, safety, working conditions, and human rights considerations at shipyards."
The introduction of YardScore is timely, given the evolving landscape of international regulations such as the Hong Kong Convention and the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, which currently lack detailed assessment mechanisms. "The current regulation has no evaluation scale, just a binary (yes/no) approval of the facility every five years," Ms Meling notes, underscoring the inadequacy of existing standards.
YardScore’s more nuanced approach promises a "race to the top" in environmental and social governance among shipyards by offering detailed evaluations that go beyond simple compliance. "There are vast individual differences between recycling facilities that have received a Statement of Compliance with HKC, and there are little incentives to improve safety, working conditions and environmental protection beyond the minimum compliance requirements," Ms Meling reveals.
Elaborating on the role of YardScore in enabling strategic decision-making for stakeholders, "YardScore will provide much-needed transparency and an incentive for continuous improvement for all stakeholders involved in ship repair, drydocking and recycling," she said.
Ms Meling adds the tool is particularly vital as companies navigate increasing regulatory pressures, such as the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, which demands thorough transparency in supply chains.
Ms Meling’s insights offer a window into the potential of YardScore to revolutionise the industry, "We can pull together here and share information. It’s a waste of time if every company must send their own team, asking the same due diligence questions to the same yard according to transparency regulations."
Set in Brussels, close to major regulatory bodies and shipping companies, the Responsible Ship Recycling Forum 2024 provides a strategic platform for maritime professionals seeking effective strategies for responsible ship recycling.
