Propulsion systems’ manufacturer Steerprop has made further inroads in the growing tugboat construction industry through a contract with a leading Turkish shipbuilder
Med Marine has awarded a contract to Steerprop to supply T propulsion units for two harbour tugs, being built to Robert Allan’s RAscal 2100 design with 35 tonnes of bollard pull at the Eregli Shipyard, on Turkey’s Black Sea coast.
Steerprop’s T azimuth thruster product line is especially designed for tug operations and tug builders’ stringent demands. They can be adapted for various propulsion configurations and tugboat operations with mechanical, hybrid or electrical prime movers.
Steerprop will supply four SP 175 T propulsion units with 1.8-m propellers in nozzles and provide the power of 1,080 kW per unit with deliveries scheduled for January 2023.
“With the development of this new product family, we are meeting our tug customers’ demands for flexibility and value in all operations and conditions, while adapting to the shipyard’s requirements for simple and seamless integration,” said Steerprop sales manager Donato Agostinelli.
“The Steerprop T design features improved flexibility, increased modularisation and scalability, while maximising the bollard pull per engine’s power input.”
Steerprop is supported by its local partner Nemomarin in supplying the T product line to Med Marine, and expects more of these orders to follow.
“We are confident we have a winning formula for the future Turkish and global tug markets,” said Mr Agostinelli.
Med Marine procurement and technical group manager Ertugrul Cetin expects the partnership to be extended to other tug building projects.
“We are sure that this partnership will contribute a lot to the mutual interests of both parties in developing a successful business relationship,” said Mr Cetin. “By working together with Steerprop, we believe we are ideally positioned to meet the clients’ increased demand for Med Marine’s tugboats.”
Steerprop sales manager Donato Agostinelli and representatives from Med Marine will present, in various technical papers, different tug propulsion technologies during the 26th International Tug & Salvage Convention, Exhibition & Awards will be held in association with Caterpillar 27-30 September 2022.
